CHAPTER 17

“The Earth is everything. Her breath was once pure and healthy and it may be once again. We only need lift the Martian boot away from her throat. Where others have failed we will not fail.”

-Captain Alexander Ross, founding address to the Earth Restoration Alliance

There was a knock on Megan’s cabin door. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes, kicked herself out of bed, and felt some relief that there was enough gravity at the moment to walk along her floor. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes as she peeked out from the door without fully opening it.

Gabriel was on the other side, smiling back at her. “Good morning, sunshine.”

Megan snorted as she peeked her head out. “I can’t stay mad at you. We did lose that simulation. Did you notice how quickly that loss started to sound like a win?”

“It’s Olympian culture, Megan. Captain Ross is an Olympian,” Gabriel shrugged, with one of his arms holding a packaged bundle in it. “Every Olympian setback has to be repackaged to look like a success.”

“I’m starting to get mad at you again. What do you want?”

“Oh, your new uniform just came in. I was the first warm body within eyeshot of the quartermaster, so here I am.”

“The Project has a single uniform code now? One of my riders will like that. The other might hate that.”

“You’re lucky you got to sleep through the announcement and the all-hands ship-wide conference call. I guess you and your fellow riders are seen more like students, or trainees...”

“Or test subjects, and not just for technology,” Megan said, with narrowed eyes. “We’re the stick that Ross uses to poke the Authority beehive and we’re going to take the stings when the Myrmidon corporate drones come buzzing out.”

“Well, anyway, here you go.” Gabriel pushed the packaged bundle at Megan until she caught it through the door. “What kind of Olympian business venture would this be without reorganization and a change of names?”

“Go on.”

“From now on, The Project and all employees and service personnel on board the Nautilus, including you, are sworn to service to the Earth Restoration Alliance, or ERA.”

“Earth Restoration? The Earth is restored? How long did I sleep?” Megan asked, jokingly.

“It’s more an ideal to reach for, I think. But there’s more! Next time you go by the galley, check out the menu... something for everyone.”

“We got supplies?”

“Do we have supplies! The fourth Tulpa is nearing completion, and it won’t be a moment too soon...”

“Go on.”

Gabriel’s expression looked a little bleaker. “The fourth is actually the very first of the Tulpa line ever devised. It’s taken a while to complete, though, and I’m not sure why. It’s been built up, taken apart, problems fixed, mistakes made with it that helped the engineers build TM-3 and TM-4 a little better, but TM-1, like I said, is going online soon. Unfortunately, it’s not the only one.”

“Unfortunately?”

“The other one isn’t ours. I heard that Rama ship is carrying a competing model. I don’t want to call
